Operating habits, frequency conventions, and on-air choices picked up from listening and operating across HF, VHF, and UHF. These community norms and ARRL best practices complement 47 CFR Part 97 rules to keep spectrum clear and operating courteous for everyone.


01 · VHF & UHF National Simplex Calling

National simplex calling frequencies serve as universal meeting channels where operators monitor, announce their presence, and establish direct radio-to-radio contact without repeaters. The primary national simplex frequency in the United States is 146.520 MHz on 2 meters.

02 · Repeater Etiquette & Timing

Simple operating habits that keep conversations smooth and leave repeaters open for breaking traffic.

Repeater Operating Checklist

  • Listen First: Always monitor the repeater for several seconds before transmitting. Someone may be in a QSO with a weak station that hasn't yet dropped the squelch.
  • The 1-Second PTT Pause: Press Push-to-Talk, pause a brief beat, then speak. This prevents repeater squelch circuits and CTCSS tone decoders from cutting off your first words.
  • The 2–3 Second Courtesy Gap: Always wait for the repeater's courtesy beep before keying your response. This resets the repeater timeout timer (typically 3 minutes) and allows breaking stations to interject.
  • Never "Kerchunk": Avoid keying up without speaking to verify access. If testing repeater reach, always state your call sign: "KM7HQX testing" or "KM7HQX test, can I get a radio check?"
  • Joining a QSO: To join an ongoing conversation, simply drop your call sign between transmissions during the courtesy pause. Do NOT shout "Break" unless there is an actual emergency.

03 · HF Frequency Clearance & Band Etiquette

Essential practices for long-distance high-frequency voice, CW, and digital operations.

1. "Is the Frequency in Use?" (QRL?)

Before tuning up or calling CQ on HF phone, always ask clearly: "Is this frequency in use? This is KM7HQX." Pause, listen, and repeat once. On CW, send QRL?. A distant station might be transmitting that you cannot hear due to propagation skip zones.

2. Watch Dial Offsets & Band Edges

On Upper Sideband (USB), voice energy extends ~3 kHz above your displayed dial frequency. On Lower Sideband (LSB, used on 40m/80m/160m), your signal extends ~3 kHz below. Never dial right at a band edge or license sub-band boundary.

3. Calling CQ & Signal Reports

Keep CQ calls concise: "CQ CQ CQ, this is KM7HQX, Kilo Mike Seven Hotel Quebec X-ray, calling CQ 20 meters and standing by." Exchange standardized RST signal reports (Readability 1–5, Strength 1–9, Tone 1–9 for CW).

4. Tune Into a Dummy Load

Under 47 CFR § 97.313, always use the minimum necessary power. Never key an antenna tuner or amplifier over an ongoing QSO. Tune into a 50-ohm dummy load or at minimum power (5–10 W) on a clear frequency.


04 · Station Identification & Phonetics (47 CFR § 97.119)

Legal identification requirements and standard international phonetic communication.

Part 97 Identification Timing

Under 47 CFR § 97.119, an amateur station must identify by transmission of its assigned call sign:

  • At the end of each communication: When signing off or concluding a contact.
  • Every 10 minutes: At intervals not to exceed 10 minutes during longer exchanges.
  • Your Own Call Sign: You are legally required to identify your own station. There is no FCC requirement to recite the other station's call sign every transmission.
Tactical Call Signs

In public service events, search-and-rescue, or ARES nets, tactical IDs (e.g. "Aid Station 2", "SAG 1", "Net Control") speed up communication. Part 97 allows tactical IDs provided you give your FCC call sign every 10 minutes and at sign-off.

Always use standard international phonetics, especially during weak-signal contacts, contesting, or emergency traffic:

05 · Essential Q-Codes & Operating Shorthand

Three-letter brevity codes and traditional Morse shorthand used daily across CW, digital, and phone.

How Q-Signals Work

Originally created for international maritime radiotelegraphy, Q-signals provide unambiguous communication that transcends spoken language barriers:

  • Question vs. Statement: Appending a question mark (?) turns any code into an inquiry. Without it, the code is an affirmative statement. (e.g. QTH? means "Where are you located?"; QTH Phoenix means "My location is Phoenix.")
  • Spoken Shorthand on Voice: Many Q-signals are used as everyday verbs and nouns on SSB and FM voice (e.g. "Let's QSY" for moving frequencies, or "Bad QRM" for interference).
  • Always Check Before Transmitting (QRL?): Before calling CQ or tuning up on HF, always ask "Is this frequency in use? This is KM7HQX" (or send QRL? on CW) to prevent interfering with an ongoing QSO.

06 · The QSO Exchange: RST Signal Reports, QTH & Grid Squares

The three fundamental pieces of information exchanged in every two-way amateur contact across voice, CW, and digital modes.

The RST Signal Reporting System

Created in 1934 by Arthur Braaten (W2BSR), the RST system provides a fast, standardized summary of incoming signal quality:

  • Phone / Voice (2 Digits — RS): Tone is omitted on SSB/AM/FM voice. A typical report is "59" (Readability 5, Strength 9) or "57". Resist the contest habit of giving everyone an automatic "59" during casual ragchewing; honest reporting helps operators evaluate real antenna and propagation performance.
  • CW / Telegraphy (3 Digits — RST): All three values are sent (e.g. 599). In high-speed Morse contests, 5NN is sent as an abbreviation because N is much shorter in Morse than 9.
  • FM Repeaters & Simplex: S-meters on FM rigs reflect limiter voltage rather than true audio clarity. Operators typically give qualitative voice reports: "Full quieting" (no background hiss) or "A little scratchy / noisy into the repeater."
Exchanging Your QTH (Location)

QTH is the classic Q-signal for station location. How you state your QTH depends on the operating context:

  • Casual Ragchewing: City and State (e.g. "My QTH is Phoenix, Arizona").
  • State QSO Parties & Contests: County and State (e.g. "Maricopa County, AZ").
  • POTA / SOTA: Park or summit reference number (e.g. "POTA Park K-0123").
  • Maritime / Portable: Geographical landmark or GPS coordinates.

Maidenhead Grid Locator System

Created in Maidenhead, England (1980), the grid locator system divides the globe into standardized geographic coordinates used across VHF/UHF simplex, satellites, digital modes (FT8), and contesting:

Why Grids Matter:
  • VHF/UHF Weak Signal: Directional beam headings and exact contact distances are calculated directly from grid to grid.
  • Amateur Satellites: Short 10-minute passes require fast exchanges of call sign + 4-digit grid.
  • FT8 / FT4 Digital: Standard WSJT-X automated sequences broadcast grid squares worldwide.
  • ARRL VUCC Award: Earned by working and confirming 100 unique grid squares on 6m or 2m.

07 · Emergency Communications & Priority Traffic

What to do when assistance is required or emergency communications are heard on the air.

Emergency Traffic Format

If handling genuine emergency traffic involving the immediate safety of life or property:

BREAK, BREAK. Emergency traffic.
This is KM7HQX [state phonetically].
Location: [GPS coordinates, highway milepost, or landmark].
Situation: [Brief, factual description of injuries or danger].
Assistance required: [EMS / Search and Rescue / Fire / Evacuation].
Standing by on frequency for immediate response.

FCC Emergency Rules (§ 97.403 & § 97.405)

Under 47 CFR § 97.403, no provision of Part 97 prevents the use by an amateur station of any means of radiocommunication at its disposal to provide essential communication in connection with the immediate safety of human life and immediate protection of property.

The "BREAK" Protocol

On amateur frequencies, the word "Break" is reserved exclusively for emergency traffic. If you hear a station transmit "Break", immediately pause all communications, yield the channel, and state: "Station breaking with emergency traffic, go ahead."

Directed Nets (ARES / RACES / Skywarn)

During formal emergency nets, speak only when recognized by Net Control (NCS). Keep reports concise, factual, and strictly relevant to the ongoing mission.


08 · Field Operations, Portable & POTA / SOTA

Practical lessons for operating portable rigs in backcountry, desert, and mountain environments.

POTA & SOTA Etiquette

When hunting activators on Parks on the Air or Summits on the Air, zero-beat their frequency, send your call sign once with clear spacing, and never call over another station the activator is working.

Battery Power & LiFePO4

A 100 W HF transceiver draws ~18–22 A on voice peaks. 12.8V LiFePO4 batteries deliver a flat voltage discharge curve compared to lead-acid, preventing low-voltage radio resets under high current.

Common-Mode Chokes

Portable wire antennas (EFHW, end-fed random wires) frequently suffer from common-mode current flowing on the coax shield. Always place a 1:1 ferrite common-mode choke at the feedpoint to prevent RF in the shack and microphone bite.

Desert Heat & Duty Cycles

High desert temperatures (100°F+) reduce heatsink efficiency drastically. Keep transceivers in shaded, ventilated areas and reduce power (25–50 W) when operating high-duty-cycle digital modes (FT8, JS8Call).
